‘Shame on’ Bitcoin maximalists says Vitalik Buterin

Co-founder of Ethereum Vitalik Buterin had stern words for the Bitcoin community on Friday as he criticised its conduct during the process of Bitcoin becoming legal tender in El Salvador.

Buterin’s comments via a Reddit post were regarding Article 7 of El Salvador’s Bitcoin Law passed in June, which states that Bitcoin must be accepted as a form of payment by “every economic agent”.

“Nothing unpopular about this opinion,” Buterin said. “Making it mandatory for businesses to accept a specific cryptocurrency is contrary to the ideals of freedom that are supposed to be so important to the space.”

“Additionally, this tactic of pushing BTC to millions of people in El Salvador at the same time with almost no attempt at prior education is reckless, and risks a large number of innocent people getting hacked or scammed,” said Buterin. “Shame on everyone (ok, fine, I’ll call out the main people who are actually praising him: shame on Bitcoin maximalists) who are uncritically praising him.”

The Ethereum co-founder did not pull his punches and the rest of the crypto community quickly gave their twopence in response.

Buterin’s dad, Dimitry, defended his son’s criticism of the forceful nature of the move by Nayeb Bukele to make Bitcoin legal tender in El Salvador.

“Coercion is coercion and can’t make more freedom,” he said.

While Bitcoin maximalists bit back, suggesting that Buterin was more envious of Bitcoin’s success than concerned for the citizens of El Salvador.

“Feed me all of this salt. No one bats an eye when governments around the world force their citizens to use fiat currencies like the dollar. Once one makes it so businesses have to accept the best free market money to ever exist, it's a big problem.,” said Marty Bent.

Max Keiser is of the view that Buterin’s “breakdown” marks the beginning of the end for Ethereum.

“ETH’s pre-mining, exit scammers (Joe Lubin, et al) will soon be swept aside as #Bitcoin demonetizes shitcoin ETH, while your comments regarding Bukele expose you as a racist asshole,” Keiser said.
